Monetizing Media: Advertising Analysis and Research

The media business in the 21st Century is inextricably interwoven into the fabric of human society across world civilization. The age of using basic media-measures (such as GRP, Reach and Frequency) to identify media performance are not entirely over, but have evolved enormously in calculation and importance during the last decade of “digital.” The past, however, is not forgotten because techniques for measuring the popularity of Carol Burnett are still being used worldwide to qualify audiences to advertisers and determine performance of the media plan. The future, too, is also very clear. Digital advertising is the format through which, potentially all advertising, will be delivered in the future regardless of location, format, or screen/canvas/page-size. Tying Demos to Ad Dollars: Best Practices & Set Top Box Data

TV Set Top Box (STB) data has long held the promise of measuring new forms of advertising, including addressable and interactive. STB data has the potential to deliver transactional datasets with census-like sample sizes. Although this promise exists, STB data is challenged to be valuable now with best practices that build confidence in the data.

One key challenge for STB is demographics: TV STB data are typically household level, which does not support today’s advertising business models. Demographics are necessary for STB data to be useful today, and to become the platform for tomorrow.

To address this key challenge, comScore undertook a major research initiative to explore methods to attribute demographic information to STB viewing data. This session will provide a detailed description of the methodologies, identify the challenges and provide solutions for each issue. The takeaway to those attending this talk, will be high-quality, best practices to significantly expand the use of STB data in the media industry.

The State of Online Advertising

With the rising popularity of social media and online video, along with the growing adoption of smartphones and other connected devices, the Internet continues to consume an increasing amount of time in the daily lives of millions of consumers. As a result, brands around the globe have embraced the Internet as an important channel to build relationships with consumers, communicate a brand message and deliver targeted advertising. In fact, in the U.S. alone, online advertising grew by a staggering 23% during the first half of 2011, according to the IAB. These growth rates are far in excess of increases in traditional media, with Kantar reporting that measured media spending in the U.S. was up only 3.5% so far this year.

This presentation from comScore Executive Chairman Gian Fulgoni will provide a review of the current state of the digital advertising market, with a focus on social media. Using findings from a variety of advertising effectiveness research, Mr. Fulgoni will highlight key trends in the industry as well as share insight into what’s working and what’s not when it comes to online advertising.
