Apple Needs To Think "Platform" Not "Device"
Posted September 09, 2005 at 11:20 AM by Seamus McAteer

The belated launch of Motorola's ROCKR with integrated support for iTunes met with a lackluster response. To criticize Apple's wireless strategy based on the industrial design and specifications of one device misses the mark. Apple's strategic vision in the wireless sector is blinkered by its success with the iPod. The wireless sector is different. Even if the ROCKR was a breakthrough device it would take it at least 18 months to break through a 1 million installed base. To emulate the success of the iPod in the wireless sector Apple needs to adopt a more open posture to licensing support for iTunes that will insure that it is supported on at least a dozen or more handsets.
